The Still... |
||
Experiment #1 |
Distilling Water
This tests the seals, and verifies the still is working properly. This is important as it helps ensure there are no alcohol vapor leaks. You will be able to see water vapor escaping from the systems where it ought not. Should there be unintended leaks and you skip this test, you are unlikely to notice escaping alcohol vapor. Moreover, water vapor is not flammable while alcohol vapors are flammable. Be safe. Always run a water vapor test after installing / modifying your still. |

Fire & Heat... |
||
Experiment #3 |
Turkey Fryer.
The purpose of the third experiment is to determine whether the turkey fryer gets hot enough. We had previously used a smaller gas grill which didn't provide sufficient heat. It was designed to run off the small "one pound" LP battles commonly used on Coleman camping stoves. When using such a small flame a very modest breeze is able to blow away a very significant portion of the heat created. This problem would be mitigated if housed within a closed shed. |

Calibrating Equipment... |
||
Experiment #4 |
Turkey Fryer.
Determine whether the thermometer reads 212*F in boiling water. |
|
Experiment #7 |
Turkey Fryer.
Determine calibration of a second digital thermometer. In Experiment #8 We Discovered This Thermometer Is INACCURATE. We can't use it! |
|
Using Turbo Yeast to Make Beer... |
||
Experiment #5 |
Turbo Yeast.
The fifth experiment is brewing a "sugar beer" with a "turbo" yeast. Sugar is the most basic food stock. For this reason it is useful to learn how to operate your still. "Turbo" yeast typically has additional nutrients added allowing the yeast to live in sugar-water. It also completes its fermentation more quickly than many other strains of yeast. |
|
Experiment #6 |
Turbo Yeast.
The sixth experiment is brewing another "sugar beer" with another brand of "turbo" yeast. |
|
Experiment #9 |
Turbo Yeast.
In this experiment we are varying the percentage of yeast used in the 24-Hour Turbo Yeast recipe for sugar beer. |
|
Beer Stripping Runs... |
||
Experiment #2 |
Beer Stripping Run
The second experiment is to perform a "stripping run" on the "beer." The reason for this is to reduce the amount of water in the beer. Typically this will raise the alcohol content of the beer to 30% to 40% alcohol by volume (%ABV). Once this is done the "beer" is then called "low wine." |
|
Experiment #8 |
Beer Stripping Run
In the eighth experiment we performed another "stripping" run and collected fifteen (15) 800-ml jars of product. In Experiment #8 We Discovered This Thermometer Is INACCURATE. We can't use it! |
